What is the Best Pearl Size for a Necklace?

What is the Best Pearl Size for a Necklace?

The honest answer is that there is no single best size. The right pearl for a necklace depends entirely on the person wearing it. So, their height, their build, their face shape and how they carry themselves.

Here’s how to think about it, with guidance from Chrissie Douglas of Coleman Douglas Pearls.

Start with height and build

Scale is the first consideration. A larger pearl holds its own on a tall, statuesque frame. In short, it has the presence to match. On a finer, more petite figure, the same pearl can overwhelm rather than enhance.

"If you're a very tall statuesque woman or man, larger pearls will suit you because they will stand up to your stature," says Chrissie. "If you're very petite, don't wear big pearls because they will just overwhelm you. Wear small pearls to accentuate your fineness and your beauty."

As a starting guide, Chrissie recommends 7mm and under for a petite frame, and from around 8mm upward (to 20mm or 22mm) for a taller, more statuesque figure. For pendants, the rules are more relaxed, though she suggests staying below 13mm for a finer build.

Face shape and graduated pearls

Face shape plays its own role, particularly when it comes to deciding between a uniform strand and a graduated one.

A graduated necklace (where pearls increase in size toward the centre) has a long history. In the 1950s, it was partly practical. Large cultured pearls were scarce, so skilled craftspeople used them sparingly at the centre of smaller pearls. The result required real expertise to look right, and it was far from a budget solution.

Today, Chrissie recommends graduated pearls for rounder or squarer face shapes, where the downward movement of increasing size creates a lengthening effect. "If you have an almond shaped face or a very long face, keep away from graduated pearls. They would just elongate your face further."

Try them with a full-length mirror

One piece of advice Chrissie gives every client is simple but often overlooked.

"When you try pearls on, don't just try them on with a short little mirror that shows your face. Try them on with a full-length mirror, because people will be seeing all of you, not just your face. That is where the misalignment of size will be truly shown."

It's a reminder that pearl jewellery is worn on the whole body, not just the neckline. What looks balanced at close quarters can read very differently at full length.
