Pearl earrings are often where a pearl collection begins, so it's natural to wonder what to wear with them. Should the necklace match exactly? Can you mix shapes? The answer is less about strict rules and more about balance: keeping the pearls in proportion so that people notice you, not the jewellery itself.
Here, Chrissie Douglas explains how to pair a necklace with every style of pearl earring, from small studs to baroque drops.
Start with a match
Matching is the natural place to start, but one detail makes all the difference. "The obvious choice is to match the type and shape of pearl in your earrings and your necklace," says Chrissie. "And always keep in mind the general rule: the pearls in your earrings should be slightly bigger than those in your necklace or pendant."
That's because your earrings sit closest to your face, so a slightly smaller necklace supports them rather than competing with them.

Big earrings, quiet necklace
If your earrings are large, resist the urge to pair them with an equally bold necklace. "You don't want to overwhelm yourself," says Chrissie. "Pearls are there to enhance you and make you look gorgeous and glowing, not to submerge you in nacre."
Instead, she suggests a small accent: a delicate pearl pendant, or a very slim single row worn a little below the collarbone rather than close to the neck. "It gives you a bit of breathing space," she says, "and it enhances you rather than the earrings."
Small studs, free rein
Small studs give you the most freedom. Worn as a subtle accent, they go with almost anything:
- A pendant
- A traditional strand
- A bold, strong necklace
You can even wear several tiny studs at once alongside a pendant or necklace.
"The key is that you must never be overwhelmed," says Chrissie, "but the necklace must stand up to the earring."
What about drop earrings?
With drop earrings, Chrissie recommends a fine pearl necklace with a drop of the same shape, or a simple chain with a pearl drop.
A matching shape isn't essential, though. "Drop earrings look great with a round pearl necklace too, so I wouldn't overcomplicate your life there."
Matching baroque earrings
Baroque pearls are irregular and organic, no two quite alike, and that individuality is what makes them so appealing. "If your earrings are baroque, I really would go for a baroque necklace or pendant," says Chrissie.
"I wouldn't mix too much, because you don't want the eye of the beholder not knowing where to look. You want to draw the eye to you, to your eyes and your face, so that you glow and look harmonious."
When in doubt, go under
If one idea runs through all of this, it's restraint. "If you're going to err in any way, go under," says Chrissie. "Don't overdress, and don't pile them on. We want you to be enhanced, not for the the pearls to stand out. We want you to look fantastic, with the pearls complementing you."
The right pairing isn't about matching sets so much as proportion: slightly larger at the ear, quieter at the neck, and always in balance with you.
