What are the Best Pearl Earrings for Graduation?

Graduation is one of those rare moments that deserves a gift with some permanence to it. Not something worn once, but a gift that travels through decades. A piece that will be on the wearer's dressing table thirty years from now. Still earning compliments and still carrying the memory of the day. Chosen well, pearl earrings do exactly that.

The question is which ones. With so many pearl types, colours and styles to choose from, it helps to think about the person receiving them rather than the occasion itself. Here is how to approach it with advice from our founder and creative director, Chrissie Douglas.

Start with white pearls if you're unsure

If the graduate doesn't yet own any pearls, white is the natural starting point. And not just because it's safe. White pearls are genuinely the most versatile thing in a jewellery box, sitting as easily with a first work outfit as with a wedding guest dress years down the line.

"If you want something which is absolutely translatable and the lucky wearer hasn't got any pearls yet, go for white pearls," says Chrissie Douglas. "They are the essential building block."

Classic white Akoya studs are the most enduring choice here. Round, high-lustre and the kind of earring that never looks out of place. A pair of white freshwater pearl drops offers a little more movement and personality while remaining equally wearable.

Match the colour to the person

If the graduate already has white pearls, or if you know their colouring well, a more personalised colour can make a gift feel genuinely considered rather than simply appropriate.

"Go with their colouring and what they wear," explains Chrissie. "If they're blonde or blue-eyed / green-eyed, then a pale grey would be fantastic. If they have wonderful skin that tans really well, creamy tones, pink tones, peach tones are fantastic. And if it's a very striking recipient, black pearls would be very good too."

Grey pearls (often freshwater or Tahitian) have a cool, understated quality that suits fair or cool-toned complexions particularly well. Peachy and pink tones warm up olive and deeper skin beautifully. Black Tahitian pearls are bolder and more unusual. They suit someone with real style confidence and make a gift that stands apart from the expected.

Think about face shape and neck length

The style of earring matters as much as the colour. Chrissie's approach here is practical. Consider the wearer's features, not just their preferences.

Studs are the universal foundation. They’re wearable at any age, in any setting and a sensible choice for someone who doesn't yet have a strong sense of what suits them. For a graduate with an almond-shaped face, a short drop with a stud element adds a little elegance without overwhelming the face.

"If the recipient has a very short neck, keep it to studs and short drops," she says. "If they have a very long neck, drops (even short to medium drops) will accentuate it beautifully."

For the creative or colour-loving graduate

Not every graduate wants the classic pearl stud, however beautiful. For someone who wears colour, layers jewellery and has an instinct for the unconventional, a more playful design can be the right call (and still be a piece they will wear for life).

Styles like the our Tutti Frutti earrings or the Twinkling Light earrings combine pearls with gemstones. They offer that same lasting quality in a more expressive form. The pearls ground the design, while the colour and sparkle give it personality.

The question to keep coming back to

Whatever style you land on, Chrissie's guiding principle is straightforward. Choose something that will look equally good with a work outfit and a fun one. Graduation jewellery should be for life. It’s a reminder of a significant moment, worn often and worn happily, not saved for occasions that never quite arrive.
