The short answer, according to Chrissie Douglas of Coleman Douglas Pearls, is an emphatic yes.
"Pearls enhance you," she says. "And so if they enhance you, they will enhance you with whatever you're wearing."
Pearls work because you do
The logic behind this is more interesting than it first sounds. A pearl doesn't sit on top of an outfit the way a bold stone or a statement piece of gold jewellery does. It responds to the person wearing it. To their complexion, their skin, their warmth. That responsiveness is what makes pearls so versatile. They aren't competing with what you're wearing. They're amplifying who you are.
This is also why Chrissie encourages clients to wear their pearls against bare skin whenever possible. "It's great for the pearls to be worn when you are undressed, because your oils will be much richer and therefore will keep your pearls moist. And that will have a really beneficial effect." Skin oils are one of the best things for maintaining a pearl's lustre over time.
From the beach to the boardroom
Pearls are appropriate in more settings than most people realise. Beach, formal occasion, everyday work. The pearl adjusts.
Chrissie has noticed something interesting among her professional clients. "A few of my clients work as lawyers, bankers or doctors. Firms in these professions sometimes actually ask their employees to wear pearls, because subliminally, if I see somebody wearing pearls, they remind me possibly of my mum, and therefore I can trust them."
It's an unexpected insight, but it speaks to something real about how pearls are perceived: as calm, considered and trustworthy rather than showy.
The optical triangle
One practical tip Chrissie shares with clients is borrowed from photography.
"As a photographer, you aim always to have three points in a photograph. So when somebody's looking at you, if you have two earrings and a necklace or a pendant, you're creating that optical triangle, which is the perfect balance for the eye of the beholder."
It's a small shift, adding a pearl necklace to a pair of pearl earrings, or vice versa. But it changes how a look reads entirely.
Finding the pearl that works for you
The question of whether pearls go with everything is really a question of which pearl goes with you. The right colour, shape and size, matched to your complexion and the way you dress. That’s the difference between a pearl that disappears and one that genuinely lights up your face.
This kind of bespoke matching is what the Coleman Douglas Pearls personal consultation is built around. Book a session with Chrissie to find the pearl that works for you.
