Which Country Has the Best Pearls?

This simple question has two possible meanings. And both are worth answering.

  • Are you looking for the finest examples of a specific pearl type, grown in their natural home?
  • Or are you searching for the greatest variety? The kind of breadth that only comes with centuries of accumulated expertise?

Below, we’ll tell you everything you need to know with the help of pearl expert, Chrissie Douglas.

Where the world's pearls are produced

Each major pearl type has its own geography, shaped by the oysters and molluscs that produce it and the waters they thrive in.

The best pearls don't always stay where they're made

Knowing where a pearl is produced is only part of the story. Whether the finest examples remain in their country of origin depends on economics as much as geography. This is where Chrissie's experience as a buyer proves invaluable.

"With any type of pearl, you need to bear in mind whether the country is wealthy or whether it needs foreign currency," she explains. "Tahiti is very keen to get foreign currency, so the best pearls Tahiti produces will rarely if ever stay there. They will always go out to the big markets. London and Paris, mainly."

Australia is the telling counterexample. South Sea pearl farms there produce some of the finest large white and golden pearls in the world. Because Australia isn’t dependent on pearl export revenues, a good proportion of the best stock stays in the country. For the pearl enthusiast visiting Sydney or Perth, this matters.

The Philippines, Indonesia and Burma present the opposite picture. Fine South Sea pearls are produced in all three countries, but the commercial incentive to export premium stock is strong. So, you’re less likely to find the best examples at source.

Japan’s unique position

Japan occupies a special position. The Japanese have a deep, longstanding love of the Akoya pearl, which is their traditional pearl. They also have a correspondingly refined eye for quality. A serious pearl buyer in Tokyo or Kyoto will find exceptional Akoya, alongside strong selections of South Sea and Tahitian.

"The Japanese will veer towards the Akoya because that is their traditional beautiful pearl," says Chrissie, "but they are also very well versed in South Sea and Tahitian pearls."

What about Mexican pearls?

As for Mexican pearls, Mexico itself is currently the best place to find them. That’s precisely because they are so new to the international market. Of course, it’s unlikely to remain the case as awareness grows.

If variety is what you're after: London and Paris

If you want sheer breadth, neither a farm nor a production country is where you want to be. You’re looking for the ability to see and compare pearls from every major producing region, assessed to the highest standards. That calls for a city with a long history of pearl dealing, expert gemmological laboratories and a tradition of attracting the world's finest stock.

"Historically, London and Paris have had the first gemmological laboratories. Since the 1900s, everybody has sent their pearls there to be tested," notes Chrissie. "Just because of that historical knowledge and tradition, I would say the best cities to find a good variety are London and Paris, followed by New York and Japan."

It is no coincidence that Coleman Douglas Pearls is based in London. Access to that depth of expertise, combined with sourcing relationships across every major producing region, means that clients can find pearls matched precisely to their colouring, style and occasion. And there’s no need to travel to four continents to do it.

The answer, in short

  • For the finest South Sea pearls at source, look to Australia.
  • For Akoya, Japan remains the spiritual home.
  • For Tahitian, the best examples flow quickly to London and Paris.
  • For freshwater, they are everywhere.
  • And for Mexican pearls, go to Mexico while the market is still young.
  • But if you want expert guidance, real variety and pearls chosen specifically for you, London is where the knowledge lives.
