For over 30 years Coleman Douglas Pearls has been committed to providing our clients with masterfully created pearl jewellery. Beautiful jewellery starts with the perfect pearl, and our lead designer and founder (Chrissie) sources pearls from across the world, creating timeless pieces that are fun, unique and original. The sourcing and procurement of our pearls is fundamental to our business - it is the first step in the creation of our unique designs.
Sourcing Pearls
When sourcing our pearls we consider the importance of colour, shape, size and quality - ensuring each pearl is hand-selected for its unique qualities and meets our exceptionally high quality standards. The natural beauty and slight imperfections within each pearl makes them truly distinctive and individual. Coleman Douglas Pearls prides itself in ensuring our pearls are ethically sourced, ensuring production does not cause ecological harm and confirming the fair treatment of our pearl farmers. Once the pearls have “passed the test”, they are sent to our atelier where they are sorted according to their shape and colour by our in-house team, ready to be used in our handcrafted jewellery.
Location, location
Depending on the type of pearl used, the location and origin will vary. We source pearls from farms in French Polynesia, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico and China. We have worked with our freshwater pearl farmers for over 25 years. Freshwater pearls are mainly cultured in small family holdings, these families work together in cooperatives. The majority of freshwater pearls are produced in family-owned flooded paddy fields, or lakes; they are produced in the provinces of Zhejiang and Hubei.
Rarity
Whilst cultured freshwater pearls are the most common type of pearl on the market, the standard we use are difficult to find. The rarity of a pearl is determined by its quality of lustre, the colour it possesses and the uniformity of its shape. Coleman Douglas Pearls only uses freshwater pearls that are dazzling in their rich, bright luster; excellent skin; and have depth to their colour, which when worn will literally “light-up” your face, enhancing your natural beauty.
Design
Once we have hand-selected each pearl we work them into wearable pieces of art - a Coleman Douglas Pearls design. Each handmade item is the result of hours of meticulous craftsmanship that combines modern technology with century’s old techniques.
